Bernard Thompson purchased the HR4-IR in 2021 and recently provided a review. His frequent shooting locations are Koringkoppies & Oryx Ranch, South Africa - 20 July 2022.




Conditions on the day of the review (Bluewildebeest hunt) were clear.


The HR4-IR has been mounted on both Bernard's .243 Win and .308 Win

Testing criteria


Ten aspects pertaining to the riflescope were highlighted for review to determine overall build, quality and value of the offering (each item was rated out of 5 with an overall score out of 10 which subsequently was 9/10):


1. Eye relief & Diopter Adjustment :

  • Easy on eye relief quick to focus. 5/5

2. Magnification adjustment :

  • A bit stiff but no problem. 4/5

3. Turrets (windage & elevation – click feel, click audibility, turret size) :

  • Perfect for dialing in long range hunting setup. Zeroing made easy. 5/5

4. Tracking (adjustment response upon firing, recoil handling, etc.)

  • Spot on, track tested on ranges from 100m – 750m and returns to zero perfect. 5/5

5. Parallax / Focus adjustment knob :

  • Very stiff and difficult in the moment to hunt long range. 3/5

6. Reticle (focal plane, size, thickness, holdovers, design) :

  • Suites me perfect, perhaps a bit smaller center dot when at full magnification. 4/5

7. Glass (ocular lens, objective lens, overall clarity at variable ranges, etc.) :

  • Clear, compares to top range optics. 5/5

8. Illuminated reticle adjustment knob :

  • Works well even though I never use this option. 5/5

9. Overall scope aesthetics and packaging :

  • Well manufactured scope, solid but not heavy. 5/5

10. Price :

  • Spot on to be competitive. 5/5
